Bordeaux Wines

Bordeaux is known for producing some of the world’s most prestigious red blends from France, typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These wines show blackcurrant, plum, cedar and spice with firm tannins and ageing potential. The region also makes high quality dry whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, as well as sweet wines such as Sauternes.

Bordeaux reds are primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. Whites use Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle. These grapes form the basis of the classic Bordeaux Blend, one of the most recognised wine styles worldwide.

Bordeaux reds often show flavours of blackcurrant, plum, cherry and graphite with notes of cedar, tobacco and spice. Left Bank wines tend to be more structured and Cabernet driven, while Right Bank wines are softer and more Merlot focused. Whites range from crisp citrus driven Sauvignon Blanc blends to richer oak matured Semillon based styles.

Bordeaux is divided into the Left Bank, Right Bank and Entre Deux Mers. The Left Bank includes famous appellations such as Médoc, Pauillac and Margaux, known for Cabernet Sauvignon. The Right Bank includes Saint Émilion and Pomerol, where Merlot dominates. Entre Deux Mers is known for fresh aromatic whites.

Bordeaux reds pair well with roast lamb, beef, game, mushrooms and hard cheeses. Their structure and savoury depth complement rich dishes. Bordeaux whites suit seafood, poultry, salads and goat cheese, while sweet wines such as Sauternes pair beautifully with blue cheese and fruit based desserts.
