Description
Description
Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is the distinguished second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré, crafted from the estate’s younger vines averaging 15 to 20 years of age. Guided by chief oenologist Isabelle Davin and cellar master Didier Thomann, the wine reflects the same precision and care that define its Grand Vin. Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré captures the hallmark character of Saint-Julien—elegance, balance, and complexity—offering an accessible yet refined expression of this prestigious Left Bank appellation.
Meet the Producer
Founded in the 17th century, Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the leading classified growths of Saint-Julien, owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920. The estate combines traditional Bordeaux savoir-faire with modern precision winemaking. Under the direction of Didier Cuvelier and oenologist Isabelle Davin, the château has gained acclaim for its expressive, structured wines that perfectly capture the gravelly terroir of Saint-Julien.
Vineyards
The Saint-Julien appellation is renowned for its deep gravel soils, which promote excellent drainage and encourage vines to develop deep root systems. Léoville Poyferré cultivates 80 hectares of vineyards spread across five distinct gravel soil types, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is made from the younger vines of these parcels, expressing the freshness and vibrancy of the estate’s terroir. Sustainable practices and minimal intervention are central to the estate’s philosophy, ensuring a pure and authentic reflection of each site.
Vinification
Grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted twice—first on a manual table before destemming and again by optical sorting—to ensure only the finest berries are selected. Each grape variety and parcel is vinified separately in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks, with some undergoing a pre-fermentation cold maceration to enhance aromatic purity and colour. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in second-fill French oak barrels, lending subtle spice and integration while maintaining the wine’s fruit-forward character.
Tasting Notes
Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré reveals an elegant bouquet of blackberries, cassis, violet, and aniseed, underpinned by delicate smoky and floral notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied, showing layers of ripe dark fruit balanced by fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. The finish is long, poised, and beautifully refined—an exceptional example of the approachable sophistication that defines Saint-Julien.
Food Match
Perfect with roast lamb, grilled beef, or duck breast with red wine sauce. It also pairs wonderfully with wild mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses.
