Tennessee Whiskey

Tennessee whiskey is a type of American whisky that originates exclusively from the state of Tennessee. While it shares many characteristics with bourbon, it is distinguished by a unique production method known as the Lincoln County Process, in which the spirit is filtered through maple charcoal before ageing. This step imparts a smoother, mellower flavour profile.

It is made from a mash bill containing at least 51% maize (corn) and must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. What sets it apart from bourbon is the Lincoln County Process, a charcoal mellowing technique in which the spirit is filtered through maple charcoal before ageing, resulting in a smoother, mellower flavour. To qualify as Tennessee whiskey, it must be distilled to no more than 160 proof (80% ABV), entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% ABV), and bottled at a minimum of 80 proof (40% ABV). Although it meets the legal definition of bourbon, most producers choose to market it under its own name to highlight its regional identity and distinctive production method.

American whiskey comes in several distinct styles, each defined by its grain composition and production method. Bourbon is made from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels, giving it a rich, sweet flavour with notes of vanilla and caramel. Rye whiskey, made from at least 51% rye grain, is known for its bold, spicy character with hints of pepper and herbs. Tennessee whiskey follows similar rules to bourbon but undergoes charcoal filtering—known as the Lincoln County Process—for a smoother finish. Corn whiskey uses at least 80% corn and is often unaged or aged in used barrels, resulting in a lighter, sweeter spirit. Finally, wheat and malt whiskeys, though less common, use wheat or malted barley as the dominant grain, offering softer, nuttier profiles. Each type contributes to the rich diversity of American whiskey, reflecting regional traditions and evolving tastes.
