Madeira is a fortified wine from the Portuguese island of Madeira, renowned for its remarkable longevity, vibrant acidity, and unique ageing process. Originally developed to withstand long sea voyages during the Age of Exploration, Madeira is heated and oxidized intentionally—either through the Canteiro method (natural ageing in warm lodges) or the Estufa method (controlled heating in tanks)—to create its signature flavour profile. It’s made from grape varieties like Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, and Malvasia, each producing a different style.

Madeira wine comes in four main styles, each named after the grape variety used and offering a distinct level of sweetness and flavour profile. Sercial is the driest style, with crisp acidity and notes of citrus and almonds, ideal as an aperitif. Verdelho is medium-dry, featuring tangy fruit and subtle nuttiness that pairs well with savoury dishes. Boal is medium-sweet, rich and smooth with flavours of dried fruit, caramel, and spice. Malvasia (Malmsey) is the sweetest style, offering luscious notes of toffee, fig, and honey, perfect for desserts or cheese boards.
