Château de Pez 2019 is a refined Saint-Estèphe wine from one of the oldest domains in the region, dating back to the 15th century. The estate covers 48 hectares, with 70 plots surrounding the Château, enabling a parcellaire approach to viticulture. The grapes undergo fermentation in traditional oak vats or conical stainless steel vats to allow softer tannin extraction. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrels, 35% of which are new oak, with racking every three months and no filtration, finished with egg white fining. The 2019 vintage benefited from a mild, dry winter, early bud break, slow ripening with sunny conditions and cool nights, and a healthy harvest from September 16 to October 8, resulting in balanced fruit, precision, and elegance.

Meet the producer

Created in the 15th century by the Pontac family, Château de Pez is Saint-Estèphe’s oldest domain. It passed through various owners until Champagne Louis Roederer acquired it in 1995, bringing modernisation while respecting traditional winemaking.

Production

Grapes are hand-selected from 70 vineyard plots. Fermentation occurs in oak vats or stainless steel conical vats, followed by 12 months in barrels (35% new oak) with quarterly racking. No filtration is applied, and the wine is fined with egg whites for finesse.

Tasting notes

Hints of liquorice and golden tobacco on the nose lead to redcurrant, blackberry, and floral iris aromas. The palate is smooth, syrupy, and reminiscent of raspberry jelly, with well-integrated grainy tannins, energy, great length, and precision, finishing with savoury balance and subtle sweetness.
