Blended Scotch whisky is a type of whisky made in Scotland by combining one or more single malt whiskies with one or more single grain whiskies from different distilleries. This blending process is a skilled craft, typically overseen by a Master Blender, who selects and marries various whiskies to create a consistent and balanced flavour profile. By law, all components must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks and bottled at no less than 40% ABV. Unlike single malt Scotch, which comes from one distillery using only malted barley, blended Scotch offers a more approachable and versatile drinking experience. It often features smooth, sweet notes from the grain whisky, layered with the complexity and character of the malt components. Popular brands like Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, and Ballantine’s are well-known examples, and blended Scotch accounts for roughly 90% of all Scotch whisky sold worldwide.
