Carmenere Wines

Carmenere originates in Bordeaux, France, where it was once widely planted before declining in the 19th century. Today it is most famously grown in Chile, especially in Colchagua, Maipo, and Cachapoal, where it has become a national signature grape.

Carmenere typically shows black cherry, plum, blackberry, green pepper, spice, and herbal notes with soft tannins and medium acidity. Chilean Carmenere often has ripe fruit and smoky flavours, while cooler regions can show more peppery character.

Carmenere was rediscovered in Chile in the 1990s after being mistaken for Merlot for decades. The warm climate and long growing season in regions such as Colchagua, Maipo, and Cachapoal allow the grape to ripen fully and express its distinctive flavours.

Carmenere pairs well with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, barbecue dishes, empanadas, and spicy cuisine. Its soft tannins and herbal notes make it ideal for Chilean dishes, Mexican food, and Mediterranean flavours.

The finest Carmenere comes from Chile, particularly Colchagua Valley, Maipo Valley, and Cachapoal Valley. High quality examples also come from Curico, Maule, and limited plantings in Italy, China, and the USA.
