The key is to mimic cellar‑like conditions as closely as possible. Keep bottles in a cool, dark place with a stable temperature — ideally around 12–15°C — and avoid anywhere that experiences heat spikes, such as kitchens or airing cupboards. Lay cork‑sealed bottles on their side to keep the cork moist, and store everything away from vibrations and strong odours. A dedicated wine fridge is the most reliable alternative if you want long‑term, consistent storage.

“Old World” wines come from traditional European regions such as France, Italy and Spain, where winemaking is deeply rooted in history and often guided by strict regional rules. These wines tend to emphasise elegance, subtlety and a strong sense of place. “New World” wines are produced in countries like Australia, the United States, Chile and South Africa, where winemakers generally have more freedom to experiment. These wines are often riper, fruit‑forward and more expressive of grape variety than geography.

Organic and biodynamic wines are made with fewer synthetic chemicals, which appeals to many people seeking a more natural approach. However, “better for you” is subjective. They are not inherently lower in alcohol or calories, and they still contain sulphites, though often in reduced amounts. Their main advantages lie in environmental sustainability and the philosophy behind their production rather than measurable health benefits.

The shape of a glass influences aroma, flavour and how the wine feels on the palate. A large, round bowl suits red wines because it allows more oxygen to soften tannins and release aromas. Whites benefit from a smaller bowl that preserves freshness and directs delicate aromas towards the nose. Sparkling wines are best in tall, narrow flutes or tulip‑shaped glasses to maintain bubbles and concentrate aroma. Dessert wines work well in smaller glasses that highlight sweetness without overwhelming the senses.

“Vintage” refers to the year the grapes were harvested. In regions with variable weather, such as much of Europe, the vintage can significantly influence quality and style. In more consistent climates, the difference between years is often less dramatic. For everyday drinking wines, vintage rarely matters beyond personal preference. For fine wines or bottles intended for ageing, the vintage can be a crucial indicator of character and longevity.
