Coto de Imaz Rioja Gran Reserva is a refined red from Rioja Alta, Spain, crafted primarily from Tempranillo with a small addition of Graciano to add complexity. The grapes are hand-picked from limestone-rich clay soils in Cenicero, selected for intensity of flavour and natural acidity, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for at least 18 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels (75% new), followed by a further 18 months in bottle, resulting in a brilliant ruby-red wine with russet tones, expressive aromas of ripe plums, cherries, toasted coconut, leather, and earthy notes, a fruit-forward and structured palate, silky tannins, and a persistent, elegant finish.

Meet the producer

El Coto, founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa, is one of Rioja’s most respected producers, with over 730 hectares across Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. Head winemaker César Fernandez oversees all stages of production, combining modern winery practices with meticulous grape handling to ensure quality and consistency.

Production

Grapes are hand-picked into 35kg crates, sorted, destemmed, and crushed. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 21–30 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in tank. The wine is aged for a minimum of 18 months in French and American oak barrels, then refined for 18 months in bottle to achieve complexity and balance.

Tasting notes

Brilliant ruby with russet tones, with aromas of ripe plums, cherries, toasted coconut, leather, and earthy nuances. The palate is fruit-forward and structured, with red berries, dried fruit, subtle oak spice, silky tannins, and a long, persistent finish.
