Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is known for its wide range of wine styles, including crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, mineral driven Muscadet, versatile Chenin Blanc from Vouvray and Savennières and elegant Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Bourgueil. Its diversity and freshness make it one of France’s most food friendly regions.

Key white grapes include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Melon de Bourgogne. Important red grapes include Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Malbec (known locally as Côt). These varieties thrive across the Loire’s varied climates and soils.

Loire wines vary widely. Sauvignon Blanc offers citrus, green fruit and minerality, Chenin Blanc ranges from dry and mineral to sweet and honeyed, and Muscadet is crisp and saline. Cabernet Franc shows red fruit, herbs and gentle spice, with styles ranging from light to structured.

The Loire Valley is divided into four major areas: the Lower Loire (Pays Nantais), Middle Loire (Anjou, Saumur and Touraine), Centre Loire (including Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé) and the Upper Loire. Each area has distinct climates, soils and wine styles.

Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with goat cheese, seafood and salads. Chenin Blanc suits poultry, creamy dishes and desserts depending on sweetness level. Muscadet is ideal with oysters and shellfish, while Cabernet Franc complements charcuterie, pork and grilled vegetables.

The Loire’s terroir ranges from maritime climates near the Atlantic to continental conditions inland. Soils include limestone, flint, schist, clay and tuffeau, each shaping acidity, minerality and structure. River influence moderates temperatures, while varied slopes and exposures create distinct expressions across appellations such as Sancerre, Vouvray and Chinon.
