Gamay Wines

Gamay is known for lively red fruit flavours such as cherry raspberry and cranberry with soft tannins and fresh acidity. Its bright character is similar to cool climate reds from regions like Beaujolais the Loire Valley and parts of Canada and Switzerland.

Gamay and Pinot Noir share a light bodied aromatic style but Gamay is usually more vibrant and fruit driven. Pinot Noir often shows deeper earthy complexity while Gamay highlights freshness and purity. Both grapes thrive in cooler regions including Burgundy, Oregon and New Zealand.

Gamay is extremely versatile pairing well with roast chicken charcuterie grilled vegetables salmon and many vegetarian dishes. Its acidity and gentle tannins make it suitable for a wide range of cuisines including French Mediterranean and Japanese dishes.

Gamay is most famous in Beaujolais in France but it is also grown in the Loire Valley Switzerland Canada and parts of the United States such as Oregon and California. Each region produces a distinct expression from juicy and youthful to structured and age worthy styles.

Most Gamay wines are dry although their ripe red fruit flavours can give a soft impression of sweetness. Styles vary from fresh and early drinking Beaujolais Nouveau to more complex Cru Beaujolais from villages such as Morgon Fleurie and Moulin a Vent.
