Sancerre La Grande Châtelaine is an exceptional, barrel-fermented expression of Sauvignon Blanc crafted from the estate’s oldest vines, rooted in the prized caillottes soils—pebble-rich clay-limestone that imparts depth, finesse, and a finely etched mineral character. These mature vines produce naturally low yields, giving fruit of impressive concentration and balance. After a slow, gentle pressing and cold settling, the juice is fermented and matured in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, within Joseph Mellot’s historic cellars in the heart of Sancerre. Extended ageing on fine lees followed by further bottle maturation adds layers of texture, aromatic complexity, and refined longevity. The result is a rich, structured Sancerre with remarkable aromatic intensity and poised elegance.

Joseph Mellot is one of the Loire Valley’s most historic and respected estates, known for its deep commitment to terroir and environmentally sensitive vineyard practices that highlight the diversity and nuance of Sancerre’s soils.

Production

Grapes from the estate’s oldest vines are pressed slowly to preserve purity and definition. After cold settling, the wine is fermented in French oak barrels with a carefully judged proportion of new oak to enhance structure. Maturation on fine lees brings depth and roundness, and bottle ageing ensures complete harmony before release.

Tasting notes

The nose opens with rich aromas of pineapple, pear, and gentle vanilla, which continue onto a textured palate shaped by fine oak integration and vibrant mineral tension. The finish is long, layered, and elegant.
