Piemonte Wines
Piemonte, in north west Italy, is one of the country’s most prestigious wine regions, best known for Nebbiolo based wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco. Its cool climate, rolling hills and long tradition of quality winemaking create elegant structured wines with depth, perfume and ageing potential. Piemonte also produces Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and sparkling Moscato d’Asti, making it one of Italy’s most diverse and respected regions.

Piemonte is known for producing world class Nebbiolo wines, especially Barolo and Barbaresco, which offer aromas of rose, cherry, tar and spice with firm tannins and long ageing potential. The region also excels with Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Moscato d’Asti, showcasing both traditional and modern Italian styles.
The key grapes of Piemonte are Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto for reds, and Arneis, Cortese and Moscato for whites. Nebbiolo is the most prestigious variety, forming the basis of Barolo and Barbaresco. These grapes reflect Italy’s rich heritage and Piemonte’s focus on quality and terroir.
Nebbiolo wines typically show flavours of cherry, rose, violet, liquorice and earthy spice with high acidity and firm tannins. Barbera is fruit driven with bright acidity and soft tannins, while Dolcetto offers dark fruit and gentle structure. Whites such as Arneis are fresh and aromatic, and Moscato d’Asti is lightly sparkling with sweet peach and floral notes.
Key sub regions include the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. The Langhe is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, Roero is known for Arneis and elegant Nebbiolo and Monferrato produces Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato d’Asti. Each area has its own identity shaped by altitude, soil and tradition.
Nebbiolo pairs well with truffle dishes, braised meats, game, mushroom risotto and aged cheeses. Barbera suits pasta, tomato based dishes, charcuterie and roasted vegetables. Arneis pairs with seafood and light salads, while Moscato d’Asti complements fruit desserts and pastries.
Piemonte’s terroir is defined by rolling hills, high altitude vineyards and a mix of clay, limestone and marl soils. The region’s cool climate and frequent autumn fog help Nebbiolo ripen slowly, creating aromatic wines with high acidity and firm tannins. Differences in slope, exposure and soil composition lead to distinct expressions of Barolo, Barbaresco and other local wines, giving Piemonte its remarkable diversity and sense of place.
