Cortese typically shows flavours of lemon, green apple, pear and white flowers with notes of almond and soft minerality. It is crisp, delicate and refreshing with bright acidity. Premium examples from Gavi can offer more texture, subtle complexity and a refined, elegant finish.
Cortese is primarily grown in Piedmont in north west Italy, especially in the Gavi area. It is also found in smaller quantities in Lombardy and Veneto. Piedmont remains the heartland of Cortese production and the source of its most recognised wines.
Yes. Cortese is the grape used to produce Gavi and Gavi di Gavi, two of Italy’s most famous white wine styles. These wines highlight Cortese’s freshness, citrus character and mineral profile, making them some of the most elegant whites from northern Italy.
Cortese pairs well with seafood, salads, light pasta dishes, grilled vegetables and Mediterranean cuisine. Its acidity and delicate flavours complement Italian dishes featuring lemon, herbs, olive oil and fresh cheeses. It is especially good with shellfish and simple fish dishes.
Cortese is used to produce crisp young whites, refined Gavi wines, lightly textured styles and occasional sparkling versions. Most expressions focus on freshness and purity, although some producers create more complex wines with extended lees ageing.
