Nebbiolo originates in Piedmont in northern Italy and is most famously grown in Barolo Barbaresco and the Langhe hills. It also appears in regions such as Roero Gattinara and Valtellina where cooler alpine climates shape its style.
Nebbiolo typically shows red cherry rose tar leather and spice with high tannins and bright acidity. Barolo tends to be more powerful and structured while Barbaresco is often slightly softer and more aromatic.
Nebbiolo thrives in the limestone and clay soils of the Langhe and its naturally high tannins and acidity allow Barolo and Barbaresco to age for decades. These regions offer ideal slopes and microclimates for producing complex long lived wines.
Nebbiolo pairs well with Piedmont dishes such as truffle pasta braised beef risotto and aged cheeses. Its firm tannins also complement game mushrooms roasted meats and rich northern Italian cuisine.
The finest Nebbiolo comes from Barolo and Barbaresco in Piedmont. Excellent examples also come from Roero Gattinara Ghemme and the alpine terraces of Valtellina in Lombardy where the grape develops a more delicate mountain style.
