Barbera originates in Piedmont in northern Italy and is most widely grown in areas such as Asti Alba and Monferrato. It is one of the region’s most important red grapes and has been cultivated there for centuries.
Barbera typically shows red cherry plum blackberry spice and subtle earthy notes with naturally high acidity and low tannins. Barbera dAsti is often brighter and more aromatic while Barbera dAlba can be richer and fuller bodied.
Barbera pairs beautifully with Piedmont dishes such as pasta with tomato sauces risotto grilled meats and cured Italian salumi. Its acidity also complements pizza roasted vegetables and Mediterranean cuisine.
The top regions for Barbera are Barbera dAsti DOCG Barbera dAlba DOC and Barbera del Monferrato DOC in Piedmont. High quality examples also come from Lombardy Emilia Romagna and parts of California.
Barbera shares some freshness with Sangiovese but is softer and fruitier. Compared with Nebbiolo it is less tannic and more approachable young making it a popular everyday wine in Piedmont and beyond.
