Argentinian Red Wine

Although Malbec originated in southwestern France, it found its ultimate home in Argentina’s dry, sun-drenched high-altitude climate, where it consistently produces far richer, more velvety expressions than its European ancestors. The grape adapted exceptionally well to Mendoza’s terroir, becoming the defining symbol of the nation's fine wine industry. Argentinian Malbec is a full-bodied red wine renowned for its deep violet-purple colour and plush, round texture. Cabernet Franc has also emerged as a critical darling, producing highly aromatic, fresh, and complex wines filled with red fruit, herbal lift, and crushed stone minerality. Furthermore, Argentina produces outstanding single-varietal and blended wines from Syrah, Bonarda (a juicy, berry-forward local favourite), and rich, dark-fruited Tannat grown in the northern high-altitude region of Salta.

While Argentinian red wines are typically full-bodied with generous alcohol levels (often 14% to 14.5% ABV) and deep fruit concentration, they are famous for their surprisingly smooth, supple, and approachable mouthfeel. Unlike varieties with aggressively astringent tannins like Cabernet Sauvignon or Nebbiolo, Malbec naturally possesses soft, sweet, and rounded skin tannins that do not dry out the palate. Combined with integrated acidity from high-altitude vineyard sites, entry-level and mid-tier Argentinian Malbecs offer a plush, velvety texture that makes them incredibly easy and enjoyable to drink on their own without requiring immediate food pairing.

The rich fruit weight, plush tannins, and generous alcohol of Argentinian red wines make them the ultimate match for intensely flavoured, protein-rich, and fat-laden cuisine. The classic traditional pairing is a traditional Argentinian asado (slow charcoal-grilled barbecue) featuring thick cuts of skirt steak, flank steak, ribeye, beef short ribs, and grilled chorizo sausages with herbaceous chimichurri sauce.
