Rioja Wines

Rioja is known for producing expressive red wines based on Tempranillo, often aged in oak to develop flavours of vanilla, spice and dried fruit. The region also makes fresh whites from Viura and vibrant rosé. Its classification system, including Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, is recognised worldwide.

Rioja reds are primarily made from Tempranillo, often blended with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. Whites use Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Tempranillo Blanco. These grapes reflect Spain’s rich winemaking heritage and contribute to Rioja’s distinctive style.

These terms refer to minimum ageing requirements. Crianza red wines must age for at least two years with one year in oak. Reserva red wines must age for a minimum of three years with at least one year in oak. Gran Reserva red wines must age for at least five years with a minimum of two years in oak and the rest in bottle. White and rosé wines have shorter ageing rules, but the same hierarchy applies.

Rioja reds typically show flavours of cherry, plum and red berry with notes of vanilla, coconut, spice and leather from oak ageing. Younger styles are fruit driven and vibrant, while Reservas and Gran Reservas develop deeper complexity with dried fruit, tobacco and savoury depth.

Rioja is divided into Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa are known for higher altitude vineyards that produce elegant, structured wines, while Rioja Oriental is warmer and produces riper, fuller bodied styles. Each area contributes unique character to blends.

Rioja reds pair well with lamb, pork, grilled meats, tapas, roasted vegetables and hard cheeses. Their balance of fruit and oak complements both rustic and refined dishes. Rioja whites suit seafood, salads and light poultry, while rosé works well with Mediterranean plates.
