The 2017 Viña Ardanza Reserva from La Rioja Alta is a benchmark example of classic Rioja winemaking. Crafted from 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, the fruit is sourced from mature vines—Tempranillo from the estates in Cenicero and Fuenmayor (over 30 years old), and Garnacha from vineyards in Tudelilla at an altitude of 550 metres.

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous optical sorting before fermentation at 27°C. Natural malolactic fermentation follows, ensuring purity and elegance. Ageing takes place in American oak barrels—Tempranillo for 36 months and Garnacha for 30 months—using 20% new oak and the remainder being barrels previously used for three wines. The wine is racked by hand using traditional candlelight methods, and was bottled in March 2021.

In the glass, it displays a bright, intense cherry-red colour with garnet hues at the rim. The nose is rich and expressive, offering ripe red fruit—cherry, currant, and red plum—layered with balsamic notes and well-integrated spice: black pepper, liquorice, clove, vanilla, toasted caramel, and nutmeg. On the palate, it is fresh and well-balanced, with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish where red fruit and spice linger beautifully.

This was classified as an Excellent vintage by La Rioja Alta, earning an internal rating of 97 points. It is expected to age gracefully for at least 12 years.
