Description
Description
Bodegas Luis Cañas is one of the most respected family-run wineries in Rioja Alavesa, producing wines of remarkable depth and character since 1928. Nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, the estate oversees some of the region’s finest high-altitude vineyards, where poor chalky-clay soils and gnarly old bush vines yield naturally small, concentrated bunches of grapes – perfect for crafting structured, age-worthy Rioja. With 870 individual vineyard plots under its care, the estate has become a benchmark for terroir-driven wines and is celebrated as one of the leading producers of Viñedo Singulares (single-vineyard wines). Director of viticulture Rubén Jiménez, named Grower of the Year 2023 by Tim Atkin MW, has played a pivotal role in recovering ancient grape varieties and mapping out the Alavesa’s most exceptional sites, ensuring both heritage and innovation remain at the heart of Luis Cañas’ legacy.
Winemaking
Grapes undergo a cold maceration for 72 hours before fermentation in temperature-controlled sealed cement tanks at 26ºC, with daily pump-overs to extract colour and structure. Ageing takes place in a balanced mix of medium-toasted French and American oak barrels for 20 months. After the final racking, the wine is clarified, decanted, and bottled without filtration, a method that safeguards its natural complexity and ageing potential. To further guarantee longevity, only the finest quality corks are used.
Tasting Note
This Rioja shows a beautiful ruby colour with an expressive, complex bouquet of ripe sweet fruit, leather, herbs, and elegant oak. On the palate it is powerful yet juicy, offering structure and persistence, layered with spice and savoury depth. The finish is ample, long, and remarkably refined.
Viticulture
The estate cultivates 350 hectares of vines, averaging at least 45 years of age, planted across slopes and terraces of limestone and clay soils. These diverse vineyard plots are carefully categorised according to their personality and suitability for different wines. The vineyards’ altitude and exposure ensure slow, balanced ripening and fruit with excellent concentration, while all viticultural work is meticulously managed in-house to preserve quality and identity.
Food Matching
Pairs perfectly with roasted lamb, beef, hearty stews, pasta dishes, and flavourful poultry recipes.
