Meet the Producer

Bodegas Ontañón, a 5th generation family-run winery in Rioja Baja (now Rioja Oriental), is led by Raquel and Rubén Ontañón. The winery focuses on combining traditional Rioja winemaking with modern techniques, while championing organic viticulture and sustainability.

Production

The estate vineyards near Alfaro cover 200 hectares, with high-altitude plots (500–600m) producing mature vines in poor, stony soils. These vineyards have been converted to organic cultivation. Grapes are fermented in stainless steel and matured for 3–6 months in new American oak barrels, ensuring freshness while adding subtle complexity from the oak.

Tasting Notes

Aromatic with plum and cherry aromas, complemented by smoky, herbal notes and a hint of clove. The palate is complex and juicy, with bramble fruit, black pepper, and lifted savoury characters, finishing with elegance and balance.

Food Pairing

Pairs perfectly with casseroles, roasted or grilled red meat, and Manchego cheese. Also a versatile wine for everyday meals or social occasions.
