Gewurztraminer Wines

Gewurztraminer typically shows flavours of lychee, rose, peach and tropical fruit with notes of ginger, spice and soft floral tones. It has moderate acidity and a rich oily texture, giving it a bold and aromatic profile. Sweet styles show honeyed depth and lush exotic fruit.

Gewurztraminer is primarily grown in Alsace in France, where it produces some of its most expressive styles. It is also planted in Germany, Italy’s Alto Adige, Austria, New Zealand and cooler parts of the United States. It thrives in sunny sites with cool nights.

Gewurztraminer can be dry, off dry or sweet depending on the producer and region. Alsace often makes fuller dry styles, while late harvest and botrytised versions can be richly sweet. Its intense aromatics can make even dry styles feel slightly sweet.

Gewurztraminer pairs well with spicy Asian dishes, aromatic curries, rich cheeses, pâté and roasted poultry. Its exotic fruit and spice complement dishes with heat, ginger and fragrant herbs. Sweeter styles work beautifully with blue cheese and fruit based desserts.

Gewurztraminer is used to produce dry aromatic whites, off dry styles, late harvest wines and botrytised dessert wines. Many expressions focus on perfume and richness, while others highlight freshness and spice. It is also used in some sparkling wines.
