Alsace Wines
Alsace is one of France’s most distinctive wine regions, located in the north east along the Rhine and shaped by both French and German influences. Known for its aromatic white wines, especially Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris, Alsace produces expressive styles with purity, freshness and strong varietal character. Sheltered by the Vosges Mountains, the region enjoys one of the driest and sunniest climates in France, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity. Its mosaic of soils and long winemaking history make Alsace a unique and highly respected region.

Alsace is known for its aromatic white wines, especially Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. These wines are typically dry, expressive and highly aromatic, with floral, citrus and stone fruit notes. The region also produces Crémant d’Alsace, one of France’s most popular sparkling wines.
Alsace focuses on single varietal wines, mainly Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir. These varieties thrive in the region’s sunny, dry climate and diverse soils, allowing each grape to express its character clearly.
Alsace wines are typically aromatic and expressive. Riesling is dry, mineral and citrus driven, Gewürztraminer is spicy and floral, Pinot Gris is rich and smoky, and Muscat is intensely grapey. Many wines show bright acidity, purity and a clean finish, with minimal use of oak.
Alsace is divided into two main areas: Bas Rhin in the north and Haut Rhin in the south. Haut Rhin contains many of the most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards due to its higher slopes and favourable exposures. The region runs along the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, with vineyards stretching from Strasbourg to Mulhouse.
Alsace wines pair well with a wide range of dishes. Riesling suits seafood, poultry and Asian cuisine, Gewürztraminer pairs with spicy dishes and strong cheeses such as Munster, and Pinot Gris complements richer plates like roast pork and game birds. Crémant d’Alsace works well with appetisers and light dishes.
Alsace’s terroir is shaped by its semi‑continental climate, long sunshine hours and the shelter of the Vosges Mountains, which create one of France’s driest wine regions. The area contains 13 distinct soil types, including granite, limestone, clay, shale and sandstone, each contributing unique mineral and textural qualities. This geological diversity allows each grape variety to express a precise sense of place, especially in the Grand Cru vineyards.
