The letters GG stand for Grosses Gewächs, which represents the absolute pinnacle of dry German wine. It is the architectural equivalent of a French Grand Cru. When seen on a bottle, it guarantees the wine is bone-dry and has been crafted from an officially designated Grosse Lage (great vineyard site). These exceptional wines must be selectively hand-harvested from low-yielding vines, traditionally vinified, and passed by a strict tasting panel before they can be released to the market.
The easiest indicator is the word Trocken, which explicitly means the wine is dry, whilst Halbtrocken or Feinherb indicates an off-dry style. If the label features the traditional Prädikat tier system, it hints at the harvest ripeness and potential sweetness. Kabinett and Spätlese styles can range from dry to medium-sweet, whereas categories like Auslese, Beerenauslese (BA), and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) are reserved strictly for intensely sweet dessert wines.
Germany’s northerly latitude provides a beautifully elongated growing season where grapes ripen at a very slow pace. This slow viticultural journey allows varieties like Riesling to develop highly complex aromatic compounds and intense fruit profiles whilst preserving a razor-sharp, natural acidity. This brilliant tension between ripe, concentrated fruit notes and precise, piercing freshness creates wines with incredible energy, lightness of body, and extraordinary aging potential.
While Germany is globally famous for its iconic white wine, it is also a powerhouse for world-class reds. In fact, Germany is the world's third-largest producer of Pinot Noir, known locally as Spätburgunder. Thanks to warmer growing seasons and exceptional slate and limestone soils in regions like Baden, the Ahr, and the Pfalz, German red wine has achieved legendary status, offering elegant, silky textures, bright red-berry flavours, and a distinctly savoury, earthy complexity.
German wines—particularly off-dry styles of Riesling or Gewürztraminer are unparalleled partners for aromatic and spicy Asian or Fusion cuisine. Chilli heat naturally amplifies the perception of alcohol and bitterness in a wine; however, the low alcohol levels and subtle touch of residual sugar in off-dry German bottles soothe the palate and tame the spice. At the same time, the wine's vibrant, underlying acidity cleanly cuts through rich, complex sauces without clashing with bold seasonings.
