The signature style of Austrian wine is defined by crisp acidity, intense minerality, and vibrant, pure fruit flavours. The vast majority of Austria’s production focuses on dry white wines, led by the country's flagship indigenous grape, Grüner Veltliner, which is celebrated for its refreshing citrus, white pepper, and herbal notes. Austrian red wines, typically made from native grapes like Zweigelt or Blaufränkisch, are similarly distinct, offering bright red fruit characters, spicy complexity, and a refreshing, food-friendly acidity.
Austrian wine labels are highly structured and indicate quality through specific terms. Consumers should look for the acronym DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), which indicates a wine represents the typical, high-quality style of its specific protected region. For dry white wines from the famous Wachau region, three unique quality tiers are used: Steinfeder (light and fruity), Federspiel (elegant and medium-bodied), and Smaragd (rich, complex, and age-worthy). Additionally, the term Trocken signifies that the wine is dry.
While both countries share a language, a love for Riesling, and a focus on cool-climate viticulture, their wine styles are quite distinct. Austrian wine regions are generally warmer and sunnier than most German regions, resulting in wines that are naturally more full-bodied, drier, and higher in alcohol. Furthermore, whilst Germany is world-famous for its sweeter styles of wine, Austria's reputation is firmly built on bone-dry, peppery whites and vibrant, dry red wines.
Austria has long been a pioneer in eco-conscious viticulture, boasting one of the highest percentages of organic and biodynamic vineyards in the world. This is largely due to the early adoption of sustainable philosophies, such as those pioneered by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (the founder of biodynamics). Today, a massive proportion of Austrian vineyards are officially certified organic or biodynamic, supported by the national "Sustainable Austria" certification which tightly regulates water use, energy efficiency, and biodiversity.
Austrian wine is highly revered by sommeliers globally due to its incredible versatility at the dining table. The high natural acidity and distinct minerality of Grüner Veltliner and Austrian Riesling act as an excellent palate cleanser, cutting through rich, fried dishes (like a traditional Wiener Schnitzel) and complementing difficult-to-pair ingredients like asparagus, artichokes, and aromatic Asian spices. Similarly, the bright acidity and low tannins of Austrian red wines make them a superb match for roasted poultry, pork, and earthy vegetarian dishes.
