Portugal’s reliance on over 250 indigenous grape varieties is a proud result of its historical and geographical isolation. During the late 20th century, when much of the wine world was ripping up local vines to plant fashionable French varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Portuguese winemakers intentionally preserved their native viticultural heritage. This decision was supported by a landscape of microclimates and rugged mountain barriers that kept vineyards isolated. Whilst Portugal famously conquered the global market with sweet, fortified dessert styles like Port and Madeira, the country is equally a world-class producer of excellent table wines. Modern Portuguese dry wines have seen a massive rise in international prestige. Consumers can explore everything from the light, low-alcohol, and effervescent whites of Vinho Verde to the deeply concentrated, full-bodied, and structured dry [red wine] blends originating from the hot hillsides of the Douro Valley and the Alentejo region.

A field blend, known locally as vinhas velhas (old vines), is an ancient viticultural practice where many different grape varieties are planted, harvested, and fermented together from a single vineyard plot. Instead of separating the grapes by variety, the vineyard itself is treated as a single blend. This approach is incredibly common in Portugal's older wine regions because traditional farmers planted a mix of varieties as a natural insurance policy against bad weather or disease. These historic plots produce complex, deeply layered wines that showcase the unique character of the entire vineyard rather than the trait of an individual grape.

Unlike in some countries where the word is used loosely for marketing, the term Reserva on a premium Portuguese wine label is legally regulated. To qualify, a wine must come from a single, superior vintage and have an alcohol content that is at least 0.5% higher than the regional minimum requirement. Furthermore, many regional wine commissions enforce strict mandatory barrel and bottle aging periods before a Reserva can be released. The remarkable stylistic diversity of Portuguese wine makes it one of the most versatile choices for food pairing.
