Touriga Nacional originates in Portugal and is most famous in the Douro Valley and Dao regions. It is a key grape in both dry Portuguese reds and traditional Port wines grown on steep schist terraces along the Douro River.
Touriga Nacional typically shows blackcurrant blueberry plum violet and spice with firm tannins and fresh acidity. Wines from the Douro are powerful and structured while those from Dao can be more floral and elegant.
Touriga Nacional is one of the main grapes used in Port production in the Douro Valley. Its deep colour strong tannins and intense aromatics help create the richness and longevity that define high quality Ruby and Vintage Ports.
