Douro Wines
The Douro is one of Portugal’s most historic and visually striking wine regions, famous for producing Port and increasingly respected for high quality dry red and white wines. Its steep terraced vineyards, hot summers and ancient schist soils create powerful structured wines with depth, richness and a strong sense of place. As one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions, the Douro blends centuries of tradition with modern winemaking to deliver distinctive, age worthy styles.

The Douro is best known for Port, a fortified wine with richness, sweetness and longevity. In recent decades, the region has also become highly regarded for dry red wines made from traditional Portuguese grapes, offering dark fruit, spice and firm structure. Its dramatic landscape and old vines contribute to its global reputation.
The Douro uses a wide range of indigenous Portuguese grapes. Key red varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. Important white grapes include Rabigato, Viosinho, Gouveio and Malvasia Fina. These varieties are well adapted to the region’s heat and schist based soils.
Dry Douro reds typically show flavours of blackberry, plum, dark cherry and spice with firm tannins and a full bodied structure. Whites are fresh and mineral driven with citrus, stone fruit and herbal notes. Port offers rich flavours of dried fruit, chocolate, caramel and nuts depending on style and ageing.
The Douro is divided into three main sub regions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. Baixo Corgo is cooler and more humid, Cima Corgo is the heart of high quality Port production and Douro Superior is the hottest and driest area, producing powerful concentrated wines.
Dry Douro reds pair well with grilled meats, stews, game, lamb and hard cheeses. Douro whites suit seafood, salads and lightly spiced dishes. Port pairs with blue cheese, chocolate desserts, nuts and rich pâtés, depending on the style.
The Douro’s terroir is defined by steep terraced vineyards, hot dry summers and schist soils that retain heat and encourage deep root growth. The terraces help manage extreme slopes, while the river moderates temperature slightly. These conditions create low yields, concentrated fruit and wines with power, structure and longevity. Differences in altitude and exposure add further complexity across sub regions.
