Cartuxa Colheita Reserve Tinto is a prestigious red wine from the Alentejo sub-region of Évora, produced on the historic Quinta de Valbom estate, where vineyards have been cultivated since 1517. The wine reflects the tradition and expertise of the Carthusian monks who established the Santa Maria Scala Coeli Monastery in 1587. First produced in 1987, this Reserve wine embodies the heritage and terroir of Alentejo, combining Alicante Bouschet and Aragonez from the oldest vineyards of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation.

Cartuxa, under the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, is recognised for creating wines that honour centuries of local winemaking while employing modern techniques. The estate preserves both historical significance and meticulous attention to quality, producing wines of elegance, depth, and structure.

Production

Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then de-stemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel vats, followed by a 15-day maceration period to extract colour, flavour, and tannins. The wine is then matured for 15 months in new French oak barrels, before undergoing a further 15 months of bottle ageing to achieve balance, complexity, and refinement.

Tasting Notes

Cartuxa Colheita Reserve Tinto has a dark ruby colour, signalling depth and concentration. The nose reveals fruity notes, warm spices such as cinnamon and clove, and subtle balsamic aromas. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and complex, with firm, well-integrated tannins and a freshness that balances the richness. The influence of the French oak is evident in the toasty, layered flavours. Full-bodied with a powerful, persistent finish, it is a wine of remarkable structure and elegance.
