The Fonte Souto Estate Red reflects the unique terroir of this high-altitude property in the São Mamede Range. The combination of freshness and balance from elevation, concentration from low-yielding mature vines, and structure from a carefully balanced blend of varieties define this elegant wine. The blend is led by Syrah and Alicante Bouschet, with supporting contributions from Alfrocheiro and old-vine field blends.

Winemaking

Hand-harvested grapes were placed in shallow boxes, manually sorted, destemmed, and gently crushed before transfer to fermentation vats. Each fermentation was carefully monitored, with temperature and maceration adjusted according to the batch. Post-fermentation maceration enhanced tannin extraction, adding structure and longevity. Bottled in March 2020.

Ageing

50% of the blend aged for 8 months in second- and third-year 400L French oak barrels.

Tasting Note

Aromas of pine forest with notes of resin, pine needles, and a touch of mint, interwoven with ripe black plum and berry fruits. On the palate, the wine is finely textured, offering bright blackberry flavours with a subtle hint of liquorice from the Syrah. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity create tension and balance, leading to a long, persistent finish that hints at excellent ageing potential.

Storage & Serving

Ready to drink now but with good capacity for ageing. Serve at 16–18°C.
