Mourvedre Wines

Mourvedre also called Mataro likely originated in Spain where it is known as Monastrell. Today it is most famous in Bandol in Provence as well as in the Southern Rhone, Australia and California where warm climates suit the grape.

Mourvedre typically shows blackberry plum black pepper leather and earthy notes with firm tannins. Wines from Bandol are structured and age worthy while Spanish Monastrell can be richer and more fruit driven.

Mourvedre adds depth colour and structure to southern Rhone blends including Chateauneuf du Pape. Its dark fruit and savoury character complement Grenache and Syrah creating complex full bodied Mediterranean wines.

Mourvedre pairs well with Provençal dishes grilled lamb game stews and Mediterranean cuisine. Its bold flavours also match barbecue spicy sausages and slow cooked meats from Spain and southern France.

The finest examples come from Bandol in Provence. Excellent Mourvedre and Monastrell also come from Jumilla and Yecla in Spain the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale in Australia and select vineyards in California.
