Greek Wines

Greece is undergoing a dynamic viticultural renaissance driven by a shift toward indigenous grape varieties, high-altitude site selection, and modern technical precision. The country boasts hundreds of native grape varieties that have adapted over thousands of years to Greece’s diverse microclimates, limestone hillsides, and volcanic soils. These indigenous grapes offer distinctive, original flavour profiles that stand out in an international market saturated with international varieties. By combining ancient winemaking heritage with temperature-controlled vinification and organic farming, contemporary Greek producers craft bright, mineral-driven, and highly gastronomic wines that offer exceptional quality and balance.

Assyrtiko is Greece’s flagship white grape variety, celebrated for its rare ability to maintain razor-sharp natural acidity and intense mineral structure even when grown in hot Mediterranean conditions. Its most famous expression comes from the windswept, drought-prone volcanic island of Santorini, where ancient ungrafted vines are woven into ground-level basket shapes (kouloura) to protect fruit from extreme winds and blistering sun. Grown on dark, nutrient-poor volcanic ash and basalt, Santorini Assyrtiko yields a laser-focused, full-bodied white wine defined by bone-dry acidity, crushed-flint minerality, citrus peel, and a distinct, lip-smacking saline finish that reflects its island surroundings.

Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko serve as the two defining pillars of high-quality Greek red wine production. Xinomavro, grown primarily in northern Greece (most famously in the Naoussa PDO), is frequently compared to Piedmont's Nebbiolo due to its pale garnet color, high acidity, firm tannins, and complex aromatic profile of sour cherry, sun-dried tomato, olive tapenade, and dried spices. Conversely, Agiorgitiko (the star red grape of Nemea in the Peloponnese) yields a much rounder, velvety, and approachable red wine, featuring supple tannins, moderate acidity, and lush flavours of ripe red plum, sweet spice, and black cherry.

Retsina is a historic Greek wine style infused with pine resin, a practice dating back thousands of years when Aleppo pine resin was used to seal porous clay amphorae and preserve wine from oxidation. While cheap, mass-produced 20th-century versions gave Retsina a reputation for harsh, overpowering pine flavours, a modern quality revolution has transformed the category. Modern artisanal winemakers use high-quality base wines (typically crisp Savatiano or Assyrtiko) and add subtle, controlled amounts of fresh pine resin during fermentation. The resulting modern Retsina offers a balanced, sophisticated palate where delicate pine, herbal, and eucalyptus notes complement, rather than mask, the wine’s crisp citrus fruit and mineral core.

Greek wines feature high natural acidity, distinct minerality, and vibrant savoury notes that make them natural partners for Mediterranean gastronomy. Bone-dry, saline Assyrtiko pairs magnificently with fresh seafood, including grilled octopus, pan-seared sea bass, fried calamari, fresh oysters, and Greek salads topped with salty feta cheese. Crisp modern Retsina or aromatic Malagousia complements garlicky tzatziki, dolmades, and herb-roasted chicken. For red wines, structured Xinomavro cuts effortlessly through rich, fat-laden meats like slow-roasted lamb shanks, grilled pork chops, and moussaka, while plush Agiorgitiko pairs exquisitely with grilled beef kebabs, meatball stew (soutzoukakia), and hard aged cheeses like Graviera.
