Malagouzia typically shows flavours of peach, apricot, lemon and melon with notes of jasmine, basil and soft spice. It has fresh acidity and a rounded texture, giving it an aromatic yet balanced profile. Many styles are expressive and fruity, while others are more mineral and refined.
Malagouzia is primarily grown in Greece, especially in regions such as Macedonia, Central Greece and the Peloponnese. It thrives in warm Mediterranean conditions and varied soils. The grape was nearly extinct until its revival in the late twentieth century by pioneering Greek producers.
Malagouzia can resemble Viognier in its floral aromatics, stone fruit flavours and rounded texture. However, it often has fresher acidity and a more herbal Mediterranean character. Both grapes produce expressive aromatic whites with good food pairing versatility.
Malagouzia pairs well with seafood, salads, grilled vegetables, light pasta dishes and Greek cuisine. Its aromatics and acidity complement dishes featuring herbs, citrus and olive oil. It is especially good with prawns, grilled fish, mezze and vegetarian plates.
Malagouzia is used to produce aromatic dry whites, textured barrel aged styles and fresh blends with grapes such as Assyrtiko and Roditis. Most expressions focus on fragrance and fruit, although some producers craft more structured versions with added complexity.
