Smiling Donkey Douro Red is an expressive red blend from Portugal’s renowned Douro Valley, crafted from Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Barroca. The grapes are sourced from carefully selected vineyards within the DOC Douro, known for their schistous soils and steep riverbank terraces that contribute to the wine’s depth and minerality. Fermented in stainless steel to retain purity of fruit, a portion of the wine matures for nine months in French oak barrels, adding complexity and subtle spice. The result is a balanced and elegant wine that reflects both the tradition and refinement of modern Douro winemaking.

Meet the producer

Founded in 1815 by Dietrich Matthias Feuerheerd, the company began selecting and ageing fine wines in Oporto for export to Northern Europe. In 2010, the Barão de Vilar acquisition revived this historic brand, uniting the Van Zeller and Barros families—two dynasties with centuries of winemaking heritage. Today, under Álvaro van Zeller, the estate continues to craft premium wines that capture the essence and diversity of the Douro Valley.

Production

The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and varietal character. A portion of the blend is aged for nine months in French oak, enhancing the wine’s structure and adding layers of spice and toasted notes while maintaining a smooth, supple texture.

Tasting notes

Ruby red in colour with aromas of ripe red fruits, cherries, and hints of spice. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant, showing soft tannins, balanced acidity, and flavours of red berries and subtle oak, leading to a persistent and refined finish.
