Negroamaro typically shows flavours of black cherry, plum, blackberry and spice with earthy notes and smooth tannins. Its warm Mediterranean character reflects the climate of Puglia, producing a rich yet balanced style similar to other southern Italian reds such as Primitivo and Aglianico.
Negroamaro is primarily grown in Puglia in southern Italy, especially in areas such as Salento, Brindisi and Lecce. While Italy remains its heartland, small plantings can also be found in Australia, the United States and parts of the Mediterranean, where warm climates suit the grape.
Negroamaro pairs beautifully with grilled meats, tomato based pasta, pizza, roasted vegetables and Mediterranean dishes. Its dark fruit and spice complement cuisines from Italy, Greece and Spain, and it works well with hearty vegetarian dishes such as aubergine, mushrooms and lentils.
Negroamaro and Primitivo are both key grapes of Puglia, but they offer different expressions. Primitivo is often juicier and more fruit forward, while Negroamaro tends to be darker, earthier and more structured. Many blends from Salento combine both grapes to create fuller, richer styles.
Negroamaro is used to produce full bodied reds, rosés such as Salice Salentino Rosato, and rich blends with grapes like Primitivo and Malvasia Nera. These styles range from bold and warming to elegant and savoury, offering strong opportunities to explore southern Italian wine regions.
