The Mosel is known for producing some of the world’s finest Riesling, offering bright acidity, citrus fruit, floral aromatics and distinctive slate driven minerality. The region’s steep vineyards and cool climate create elegant wines with low alcohol and exceptional balance. Both dry and off dry styles are highly regarded.
Riesling is the dominant grape of the Mosel and accounts for the majority of plantings. Smaller amounts of Müller Thurgau, Elbling and Pinot Blanc are also grown. Riesling thrives in Germany’s cool climate and is the key to the Mosel’s global reputation for purity and finesse.
Mosel Riesling typically shows flavours of lime, green apple, white peach and floral notes with crisp acidity and a mineral finish. Off dry styles offer gentle sweetness balanced by freshness, while dry Rieslings are precise and structured. Ageing adds honeyed complexity and subtle petrol notes.
The Mosel is divided into the Upper Mosel, Middle Mosel and Lower Mosel. The Middle Mosel, home to villages such as Bernkastel, Wehlen and Graach, is the most famous for high quality Riesling. Each area varies in slope, exposure and soil type, contributing to distinct expressions of the grape.
Mosel Riesling pairs well with seafood, salads, spicy dishes, pork, poultry and soft cheeses. Off dry styles complement Asian cuisine and lightly spiced plates, while dry Rieslings suit shellfish, grilled fish and fresh herbs. The region’s balance of acidity and fruit makes its wines versatile with many dishes.
The Mosel’s terroir is defined by steep south facing slopes, slate soils and a cool river influenced climate. The slate retains heat and helps grapes ripen slowly, creating wines with high acidity, low alcohol and pronounced minerality. The extreme slopes force low yields and concentrated flavours, giving Mosel Riesling its signature elegance and precision.
