Shiraz Wines

Shiraz and Syrah are the same grape variety. “Syrah” is the traditional French name, producing elegant, peppery wines, while “Shiraz,” used mainly in Australia and South Africa, often refers to a riper, fuller‑bodied style.

Typical flavours include blackberry, plum, black pepper, liquorice, and spice. Cooler climates give fresher, pepper‑driven wines, while warmer regions produce richer, more fruit‑forward styles with chocolate and dark berry notes.

Key regions include France’s Rhône Valley, Australia, South Africa, California, Chile, and Spain. Each region offers a distinct expression, from structured and savoury to bold and opulent.

Most Shiraz/Syrah wines are medium‑ to full‑bodied with firm tannins and deep colour. Warmer‑climate Shiraz tends to be richer and more powerful, while cooler‑climate Syrah is often leaner and more aromatic.

It pairs beautifully with grilled meats, barbecued dishes, lamb, hearty stews, strong cheeses, and spiced foods. Its bold flavours and structure complement rich, savoury dishes exceptionally well.
