Carignan likely originates in Aragon, Spain, where it is known as Carinena or Mazuelo. Today it is most widely grown in southern France, especially in Languedoc and Roussillon, and is also found in Sardinia, California, and Chile.
Carignan typically shows blackberry, plum, black cherry, spice, and earthy notes with firm tannins and bright acidity. Old vine Carignan from Languedoc and Roussillon often has deeper concentration and savoury complexity.
Carignan adds colour, acidity, and structure to Mediterranean blends. In southern France it is commonly blended with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, while in Spain it complements Tempranillo and Garnacha.
Carignan pairs well with grilled meats, stews, barbecue, roasted vegetables, and rustic Mediterranean dishes. Its acidity and earthy notes make it ideal for lamb, sausages, and herb driven cuisine.
The finest Carignan comes from old vines in Languedoc and Roussillon, France. Excellent examples also come from Priorat in Spain, Sardinia, California’s Central Coast, and dry farmed vineyards in Chile’s Maule Valley.
