Muscadet is known for bright citrus flavours such as lemon, lime and grapefruit along with green apple, subtle floral notes and a distinctive saline edge. Its crisp acidity and mineral character reflect the cool maritime climate of the Loire Valley, particularly around Nantes.
Muscadet is made exclusively from Melon de Bourgogne, a white grape that thrives in the western Loire Valley. Despite the similar name, it is not related to Muscat. The grape produces fresh, dry wines with a clean profile similar to cool climate whites from regions such as Chablis, Sancerre and coastal Portugal.
Muscadet is a classic partner for seafood, pairing beautifully with oysters, mussels, scallops, white fish and sushi. Its acidity and saline notes also complement dishes from French, Mediterranean and Japanese cuisines, as well as light vegetarian plates such as salads and grilled vegetables.
Sur lie ageing means the wine rests on its lees, the natural yeast sediment, over winter before bottling. This technique adds texture, subtle richness and a gentle bread like complexity. It is common in Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, one of the Loire Valley’s most respected appellations.
Muscadet is produced in the western Loire Valley in France, particularly in areas such as Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire and Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu. These regions offer varied soils including granite, gneiss and schist, each contributing to the wine’s mineral style.
