Zweigelt was created in Austria in 1922 by crossing Blaufrankisch and St Laurent. It is now the country’s most widely planted red grape, thriving in Niederosterreich, Burgenland, and Steiermark.
Zweigelt typically shows cherry, raspberry, blackberry, violet, and gentle spice with soft tannins and lively acidity. Burgenland styles can be richer and darker, while Niederosterreich often produces fresher, lighter expressions.
Zweigelt is often compared to Pinot Noir for its bright fruit and soft tannins, though it can show more spice and structure. Its versatility allows it to range from light and juicy to fuller bodied styles.
Zweigelt pairs well with roast chicken, pork, sausages, schnitzel, pizza, grilled vegetables, and Central European dishes. Its acidity and fruit make it ideal for everyday meals and casual dining.
The finest Zweigelt comes from Burgenland and Niederosterreich in Austria, especially Carnuntum and Neusiedlersee. High quality examples also come from Steiermark and emerging plantings in Canada and Germany.
