Gruner Veltliner typically shows lime, green apple, pear, white pepper, and herbal notes with bright acidity. Wines from Wachau can be more powerful and mineral, while Kamptal and Kremstal often produce elegant citrus driven styles.
Most Gruner Veltliner is dry, especially in Austria, but some regions produce off dry or richer styles. In the Wachau, classifications such as Federspiel and Smaragd indicate increasing ripeness and body.
Gruner Veltliner pairs well with seafood, salads, schnitzel, Asian cuisine, and vegetable dishes. Its acidity and white pepper notes make it excellent with spicy foods, fresh herbs, and classic Austrian dishes.
The finest examples come from Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal in Austria. High quality versions also come from Weinviertel, as well as emerging plantings in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.
