A Leading Producer in Puglia’s Salento Region

San Marzano sits in the heart of the Salento peninsula, where hot days, cooling sea breezes, and iron‑rich red soils create ideal conditions for expressive, full‑bodied wines. The region’s ancient bush vines—many over sixty years old—are central to the winery’s identity. These low‑yielding vines produce concentrated fruit, forming the backbone of San Marzano’s most iconic wines, including its celebrated Primitivo di Manduria.

The winery blends traditional farming with modern winemaking, allowing it to craft wines that are both rooted in heritage and polished in style. This balance has helped San Marzano become one of Southern Italy’s most respected producers, recognised for quality across its entire range.

History and Heritage

San Marzano’s origins lie in a collective dream shared by 19 local growers who founded the cooperative in 1962. At the time, Primitivo had not yet achieved the cult status it enjoys today, but the founders believed deeply in the potential of their land and its native grapes. Their vision was strengthened in the 1980s when Francesco Cavallo became chairman, guiding the winery through decades of growth and innovation.

Over the years, the cooperative expanded to include hundreds of growers, each contributing fruit from vineyards that often date back generations. This shared heritage—combined with careful vineyard management and a focus on quality—has allowed San Marzano to build a portfolio that resonates with wine lovers around the world.

Today, the winery is known not only for Primitivo but also for expressive Negroamaro, elegant rosés, and modern blends that highlight the diversity of Puglia’s native varieties. Its wines consistently earn international acclaim, reflecting a legacy built on community, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for the land.

A Distinctive Winemaking Philosophy

San Marzano’s approach centres on:

  • Old bush vines that deliver concentrated, characterful fruit.
  • Low‑intervention farming that preserves the natural expression of local grapes.
  • Modern cellar techniques that refine texture and balance without overshadowing terroir.
  • A focus on native varieties, especially Primitivo and Negroamaro, which thrive in Puglia’s climate.

This combination results in wines that are rich yet balanced, approachable yet complex—qualities that have made San Marzano a favourite among both casual drinkers and collectors.

Signature Wines from San Marzano

San Marzano’s portfolio showcases the depth, richness and Mediterranean character that have made Puglia one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions. The following wines represent some of the estate’s most celebrated expressions, each crafted from old vines and shaped by the sun‑drenched Salento terroir.

Anniversario 62 – Primitivo di Manduria Riserva

A flagship wine and one of the most iconic Primitivos in the world. Anniversario 62 is crafted from exceptionally old bush vines, many over sixty years of age, producing a deeply concentrated, velvety wine with notes of ripe black cherry, plum, cocoa and sweet spice.

Sessantanni – Old Vine Primitivo di Manduria

Sessantanni (“sixty years”) is a benchmark for old‑vine Primitivo, sourced from some of the region’s oldest alberello vines. Rich, powerful and beautifully polished, it offers layers of dark fruit, fig, vanilla and Mediterranean herbs. A must‑have for fans of full‑bodied Southern Italian reds.

F Negroamaro – Salento IGP

A modern, expressive take on one of Puglia’s most important native grapes. F Negroamaro is plush and aromatic, with flavours of blackberries, cherries, liquorice and warm spice. Its smooth texture and depth make it a standout for those exploring beyond Primitivo.

San Marzano Rosé – Salento Rosato

San Marzano produces elegant, fruit‑forward rosés that capture the freshness of the coastal Salento climate. Expect bright red berries, citrus zest and a crisp, refreshing finish—perfect for warm evenings, seafood dishes or relaxed gatherings.

San Marzano Vermentino – Salento IGP

A vibrant white wine that showcases the Mediterranean influence on Vermentino. Crisp and aromatic, it offers notes of lime, peach, sea breeze and wild herbs. Ideal for those seeking a refreshing alternative to Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.

Edda – Salento Bianco

Edda (“she” in the local dialect) is one of San Marzano’s most distinctive white wines, crafted primarily from Chardonnay with small additions of native varieties that bring freshness and Mediterranean character. Rich, textural and beautifully aromatic, it offers notes of peach, citrus blossom, vanilla and gentle spice, supported by a creamy palate and vibrant acidity. Edda is a modern Southern Italian white—elegant, expressive and perfectly suited to seafood, risotto or refined Mediterranean dishes.
