Verdejo Wines

Verdejo typically shows flavours of lime, grapefruit, peach and melon with notes of fennel, herbs and a light nutty edge. It has crisp acidity and a textured mouthfeel, giving it a fresh yet layered profile. Many styles are aromatic with a long citrus and herbal finish.

Verdejo is primarily grown in Rueda in central Spain, where it thrives in high altitude vineyards with cool nights. Smaller plantings exist in Castilla y León and a few other Spanish regions. Rueda remains the benchmark for quality Verdejo.

Verdejo shares some traits with Sauvignon Blanc, such as citrus, herbs and bright acidity, but it tends to have a fuller texture and a distinctive fennel note. It can be more complex and slightly richer, especially when aged on lees or partially barrel fermented.

Verdejo pairs well with seafood, shellfish, salads, tapas, grilled vegetables and light Mediterranean dishes. Its acidity and herbal notes complement dishes featuring lemon, garlic and fresh herbs. It is especially good with prawns, white fish and simple summer plates.

Verdejo is used to produce crisp young whites, more textured lees aged styles, oak influenced versions and blends. Many producers focus on freshness and aromatics, while others craft complex age worthy expressions with depth and structure.
