The Cape Icon with Eurpean Influence

Meerlust’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in restraint, balance and a deep respect for terroir. The estate’s proximity to the ocean moderates the warm South African climate, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop complexity while retaining freshness. This combination of maritime influence, gravelly soils and traditional cellar practices gives Meerlust wines their signature structure, finesse and longevity. The estate has long been regarded as a benchmark for South African fine wine, with a reputation built on consistency, heritage and uncompromising quality.

The History of Meerlust Wine

The Myburgh family has farmed Meerlust for more than eight generations, shaping the estate into one of the Cape’s most respected wine properties. The release of Rubicon in 1980 marked a turning point for South African wine, demonstrating that the country could produce world‑class blends capable of ageing gracefully for decades. Since then, Meerlust has continued to refine its style, combining traditional European influences with the distinctiveness of Stellenbosch’s terroir. Today, the estate remains a symbol of South African excellence, producing wines that are both timeless and unmistakably Meerlust.

Meerlust's Winemaking Tradition

Meerlust focuses on classical varieties and traditional methods, favouring hand‑harvesting, gentle extraction and careful oak maturation. The goal is always balance—wines with depth and concentration, but also freshness, structure and the ability to evolve beautifully in bottle. This approach has earned Meerlust a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate wines with poise, character and a strong sense of place.

Meerlust Wines

Meerlust Rubicon

Rubicon is Meerlust’s flagship wine and one of South Africa’s most celebrated Bordeaux‑style blends. Typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it offers layers of cassis, plum, graphite and cedar, supported by fine tannins and a long, elegant finish. Rubicon is built for ageing, gaining complexity and refinement over time while remaining beautifully balanced in its youth.

Meerlust Chardonnay

Meerlust Chardonnay is a refined, Burgundian‑inspired white wine with notes of citrus, ripe stone fruit, hazelnut and subtle oak spice. Partial barrel fermentation and extended lees contact give the wine texture and depth, while the estate’s cool maritime climate ensures freshness and precision. It is one of the Cape’s most consistently elegant Chardonnays.

Meerlust Merlot

Meerlust Merlot is plush, polished and classically styled, offering flavours of dark cherry, plum, mocha and warm spice. The wine’s supple tannins and refined structure make it approachable yet sophisticated, with enough depth to develop gracefully over several years. It is a benchmark for South African Merlot, combining richness with restraint.

Meerlust Pinot Noir

Meerlust Pinot Noir is crafted in a style that bridges Old World finesse with New World purity. Expect bright red cherry, cranberry and pomegranate alongside earthy undertones and gentle oak influence. The cool breezes from False Bay help preserve acidity, giving the wine lift and elegance. It is one of the Cape’s most characterful expressions of Pinot Noir.

Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon

Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon is structured, intense and deeply expressive, showcasing cassis, blackberry, tobacco leaf and graphite. Firm yet refined tannins give the wine excellent ageing potential, while the maritime influence adds freshness and balance. It is a classic Stellenbosch Cabernet, crafted with precision and built to last.
