Description
Description
Meerlust Estate has been in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756, and today the eighth generation, Hannes Myburgh, continues its long tradition of thoughtful, detail-driven winemaking. The name “Meerlust” translates to “pleasure of the sea”, a nod to the estate’s position just five kilometres from False Bay and south of Stellenbosch. The cooling maritime influence slows ripening, preserves natural acidity and lends the estate’s wines their signature refinement.
Vineyards
This Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the character of Meerlust’s own terroirs, with fruit drawn from three key parcels on the property. The Compagniesdrift vineyard sits on a warm, north-facing slope where weathered granite soils create wines of expressive aromatics and bold structure. The coarse, gravelly texture and generous soil depth encourage slow, even ripening. By contrast, the River Terraces feature sandy soils threaded with rounded stones, offering exceptional root penetration and the estate’s widest diurnal temperature range. This shift between warm days and cool nights enhances freshness and intricate flavour development, especially vital for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winemaking
The wine is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and vinified parcel by parcel. Each block was hand-picked, fermented separately and racked into barrel for six months, where malolactic fermentation took place. After this first phase of élevage, the final blend was selected, assembled and returned to barrel for a further twelve months of maturation. Half of the barrels were new French oak, contributing depth, polish and gentle spice without overwhelming the fruit.
Vintage Information
Winter brought generous rainfall and long periods of cold, replenishing the vineyards and providing the necessary chill for dormancy. A hot, dry spring was followed by a moderate growing season, leading to even budburst and a slow, balanced ripening cycle—ideal conditions for a late-ripening variety like Cabernet Sauvignon. The resulting fruit showed clarity, concentration and excellent structural potential.
Tasting Note
The 2020 vintage opens with a deep, youthful colour and an intense garnet rim. The nose is layered with dark and red fruits alongside hints of oyster shell and kelp—distinctive hallmarks of Meerlust Cabernet. On the palate, ripe blueberries meet finely woven tannins, creating a wine that is both structured and elegant. Notes of dark chocolate and salted liquorice carry through to a long, poised finish. Still youthful, it promises increasing complexity with age.
Food Pairing
A natural match for roasted meats, steak and game, where the wine’s depth and savoury nuances complement richly flavoured dishes.
