Meerlust Red is a carefully crafted estate-grown blend from Stellenbosch, South Africa, expressing the character of the estate’s four distinctive terroirs. It is full-bodied and structured, with vibrant red and black fruit, warm spice, and soft, rounded tannins.

Meet the producer

Meerlust Estate, in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756, continues to uphold a legacy of quality winemaking under 8th-generation winemaker Hannes Myburgh. Located 5km from False Bay, the coastal influence ensures slow and even ripening of grapes. The Meerlust Red was introduced permanently in 2020 to complement the flagship Rubicon, showcasing the estate’s focus on young vineyards and consistent quality.

Vineyards

The Red draws fruit from four terroirs: Compagniesdrift with granitic soils producing expressive and bold wines; River Terraces with sandy soils and river stones promoting delicate fruit-forward character; Quarry with rocky greywacke and shale yielding precision and red fruit; and Lowlands with clay-rich soils creating smooth, silky wines with prominent black fruit.

Production

Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot are fermented separately before malolactic fermentation in 300 L barrels and large Foudré. After 8 months in oak, the parcels are blended and aged an additional 8 months to achieve harmony and structure.

Tasting notes

Youthful ruby red with garnet hues. Aromas of supple red and black fruit, warm spice, and subtle oak. The palate is full-bodied and structured, packed with fresh red fruit and soft, rounded tannins.
