Meerlust Rubicon is a premium red blend from Stellenbosch, South Africa, expressing the estate’s diverse terroirs. It is structured, full-bodied, and elegant, with a rich core of dark fruit, layered spice, and seamlessly integrated oak.
Meet the producer
Meerlust Estate has been in the Myburgh family since 1756, with 8th-generation winemaker Hannes Myburgh continuing the tradition of meticulous, terroir-driven winemaking. Located near False Bay, the cooling coastal influence ensures slow, even ripening and concentration of flavours in the grapes.
Vineyards
The Rubicon draws fruit from four distinct terroirs: “Die Kop” with coarse, granitic soils producing bold structure; River Terraces with sandy, river-stone soils promoting delicate, fruit-forward wines; Quarry with rocky greywacke and shale soils yielding wines of precision and red fruit; and Lowlands with clay-rich soils giving smooth, silky textures with prominent black fruit.
Production
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot are fermented separately before undergoing malolactic fermentation in 300 L barrels and large Foudré. After 8 months in barrel, the components are blended and aged another 10 months to harmonize flavors and structure.
