Marsanne typically shows pear, peach, melon, honey, almond, and spice with a full body and moderate acidity. With age it can develop nutty, waxy, and complex flavours, especially in Hermitage.
Marsanne is often blended with Roussanne in the northern Rhone to add richness, texture, and weight. In the southern Rhone it appears in white blends alongside Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc.
Marsanne pairs well with roast chicken, pork, creamy sauces, seafood, scallops, and Mediterranean dishes. Its texture and subtle spice make it ideal for richer white wine pairings.
The finest Marsanne comes from Hermitage in the northern Rhone Valley, France. Excellent examples also come from Saint Joseph, Crozes Hermitage, and from top producers in Australia’s Victoria region.
