Roussanne originates in the Rhone Valley, France, and is a key white grape in Hermitage, Saint Joseph, and Chateauneuf du Pape. It is also grown in Savoie, Provence, California, and Australia.
Roussanne typically shows pear, peach, apricot, honey, chamomile, and herbal notes with medium to full body and fresh acidity. With age it can develop nutty, honeyed, and complex flavours.
Roussanne is often blended with Marsanne in the northern Rhone to add aromatics, acidity, and elegance. In the southern Rhone it appears in white Chateauneuf du Pape alongside Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc.
Roussanne pairs well with roast chicken, seafood, scallops, creamy sauces, Mediterranean dishes, and soft cheeses. Its texture and aromatics make it ideal for richer white wine pairings.
