A Modern Icon of Argentine Winemaking

El Enemigo was founded in the late 2000s with a clear mission: to create wines that honour Argentina’s European‑immigrant winemaking heritage while pushing boundaries in style, structure and terroir expression. The name El Enemigo (“The Enemy”) refers to the internal battles that shape us—an idea that underpins the philosophy of the winery and its bold, expressive wines.

The project focuses on high‑altitude vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Gualtallary, areas known for limestone‑rich soils, intense sunlight and cool nights. These conditions produce wines with remarkable freshness, tension and ageing potential—qualities that have helped El Enemigo stand out in the global market.

The Founding Vision of El Enemigo

The idea for El Enemigo was sparked during a dinner in London celebrating Nicolás Catena’s Decanter Man of the Year award. Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil decided to create a winery that would focus on Cabernet Franc—a grape they believed could rival the world’s best when grown in Mendoza’s high‑altitude soils.

Alejandro Vigil, often described as one of Argentina’s most avant‑garde winemakers, brought deep expertise in soil science and viticulture, while Adrianna contributed historical insight and a passion for European classics. Together, they built a winery that blends tradition with innovation, producing wines that are both intellectually compelling and deeply pleasurable.

Today, El Enemigo is recognised as one of Argentina’s most important boutique producers, with a cult following and a reputation for excellence across its entire range.

A Distinctive Winemaking Philosophy

El Enemigo’s style is defined by:

  • High‑altitude vineyards in Gualtallary and Luján de Cuyo
  • Limestone‑driven minerality and natural freshness
  • Age‑worthy Cabernet Franc blends, inspired by Bordeaux traditions
  • Minimal intervention to preserve purity and terroir
  • A blend of art, history and science, reflecting the founders’ backgrounds

This approach results in wines that are structured yet elegant, powerful yet balanced—bottles that reward both immediate enjoyment and long‑term cellaring.

Signature Wines from El Ememigo

El Enemigo Malbec

El Enemigo Malbec captures the depth and elegance of high‑altitude Mendoza fruit, offering a style that is both powerful and refined. Sourced from vineyards in Gualtallary and Luján de Cuyo, the wine shows dark plum, blackberry and violet, lifted by natural freshness from the region’s cool nights. Subtle oak ageing adds notes of cocoa and spice without overshadowing the purity of the fruit. This is a Malbec crafted with intention—structured, expressive and unmistakably shaped by its mountain origins.

El Enemigo Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is the beating heart of El Enemigo, the variety that first inspired the project and continues to define its reputation. The wine is vibrant and aromatic, with layers of redcurrant, graphite, herbs and floral lift, supported by a mineral backbone drawn from limestone soils. Its elegance, tension and age‑worthy structure have earned it international acclaim, placing it among Argentina’s most celebrated reds.

El Enemigo Chardonnay

El Enemigo Chardonnay is a striking expression of high‑altitude white winemaking in Mendoza. Fermented and aged in old barrels and foudres, it combines richness with remarkable freshness, offering notes of citrus, white peach, toasted almond and subtle spice. The influence of Gualtallary’s limestone soils brings a distinctive mineral edge, giving the wine precision and length. It is one of Argentina’s most characterful Chardonnays, consistently praised for its complexity and balance.

Gran Enemigo – Single Vineyard Range

The Gran Enemigo single‑vineyard wines represent the pinnacle of the estate’s work, each sourced from a distinct high‑altitude site such as Gualtallary, El Cepillo, Chacayes or Agrelo. These wines are inspired by old‑world Cabernet Franc blends, offering depth, structure and extraordinary ageing potential. Each vineyard brings its own personality—Gualtallary’s chalky tension, El Cepillo’s floral lift, Chacayes’ dark fruit and spice, Agrelo’s plush texture—resulting in a collection that showcases the full diversity of Mendoza’s mountain terroirs.

El Enemigo El Barranco – Bonnarda

El Barranco is a celebration of Argentina’s heritage grape, Bonnarda, reimagined through the lens of high‑altitude winemaking. The wine is vibrant and juicy, with flavours of black cherry, blueberry and wild herbs, supported by soft tannins and a lively finish. It offers a fresh, modern take on a traditional variety, showing how Bonnarda can shine when treated with the same care and precision as the estate’s flagship reds.

El Enemigo Syrah–Viognier

This co‑fermented blend brings together the spice and depth of Syrah with the aromatic lift of Viognier, echoing the classic style of the Northern Rhône while remaining distinctly Argentine. The wine shows dark berries, black pepper, violets and a touch of apricot, wrapped in a silky texture and supported by natural acidity from high‑altitude vineyards. It is expressive, elegant and beautifully balanced—a standout for those seeking something different within the El Enemigo range.
